A labelled picture of the fins on a betta

Betta Tail Types:
The Veiltail: (VT)
Veiltail are the most common Betta found in stores, they have no extended rays and there tail is longer than most other types, it also droops unlike other tail types, a VT’s tail is non symmetrical whereas others are.
Male:

A good tail shot of my male Blaze:

Female betas usually only have 2 rays, the edging of the tail is not straight they curves towards each other, the anal fin is long and scoops again not symmetrical.
Female:
My VT female Rose

Combtail:
Most Combtail bettas are crosses of VT and CT, but others have been known, they have extended rays but to a smaller extent to that of a Crowntail. Has more than 50% webbing length.
Male:

My Boy Royal
Female:
PICCY NEEDED!!

Crowntail: (CT)
Crowntails are becoming easier to find but still not a common as the VT. A Crowntail has a 50% fin membrane reduction, leaving them with their extended rays. Some Crowntails have ‘Double branching’ or ‘Double ray’
Male:

With double branching/ray:
PICCY NEEDED!!

Female:
PICCY NEEDED!!

Double Tail: (DT)
Double tails as you can guess from the name have ‘two’ tails, there tail is split in two down the middle giving them two identically sized tail lobes, DT’s have an increased number of rays, there dorsal fin is much larger sometimes double the size of that of a single tailed betta, this is due to a larger number of rays.
Male:

Female:
PICCY NEEDED!!

Delta or Super Delta: (SD)
The delta or super delta tail shape is like that of an open fan, wider at the end than the base,  a super delta will have a larger spread than that of a delta, SD is normally between 130o to just under 180o.
Male: SD

Females can have between 2 and 6 rays, the edging of their tail is straight not curved like that of the VT,  her anal fin will be more defined to, not as scooped.
Female:
PICCY NEEDED!!

Halfmoon: (HM)
Halfmoons have at least a 180o (half circle) caudal fin, if it is above the 180o it is sometimes known as an ‘over Halfmoon’ (OHM), this shape is due to an increased amount of branching in the rays, the shape is symmetrical.
Male: (HM)
PICCY NEEDED!!

Male: (OHM)

Female: (HM)

Plakats: (PK)
Plakats are short finned bettas and males are easily mistaken for females, these are the natural, wild form of betta splendens, PK’s are generally faster due to the lack of fins weighing them down. The anal fin of the male is extended and pointed when compared to that of a female. Tail is symmetrical, and the rays branch at least once.
Male:
PICCY NEEDED!!

Female plakat will have a smaller, straighter, shorter anal fin then any of the other females.
Female:
My two Female PK’s

Now the important part:
Telling a male Plakat from a female:
A few points to look out for as male PK’s are becoming more popular at LFS as females.
Males tend to have much longer ventrals than females.
Males have an extra layer of skin on their gill making it possible for them to make the big flare face. When females flare their girls will flare out but that BIG extra layer that frames the face won't be there (also known as there beard).
Males have long pointed anal fins.

As you can see still a lot of gaps so if you have any pictures of the other tail types that you wouldn't mind me using with credit given then PM me Smile
